Frequently Ask Question
What is a boom lift and how does it work?
A boom lift is a type of aerial work platform that uses an extendable arm, the boom, to elevate workers and equipment to height. Unlike a scissor lift which moves only vertically, a boom lift can reach outward horizontally as well, allowing access to areas that are not directly above the machine. The platform is controlled from both the ground and the platform itself, giving the operator precise positioning at height.
What types of boom lifts do you offer?
We offer two main types: articulated boom lifts and telescopic boom lifts. Articulated boom lifts, sometimes called knuckle booms or cherry pickers, have multiple jointed sections that can bend around obstacles, making them ideal for complex or congested work areas. Telescopic boom lifts extend in a straight line and are suited for maximum reach in open environments. Both types are available for sale and rental.
How high can your boom lifts reach?
Our boom lifts reach working heights of up to 185 feet (approximately 56 metres). The right model depends on the working height required, the horizontal outreach needed, and the load that will be on the platform. Our team can help identify the correct unit for your specific project conditions.
What is the difference between an articulated and a telescopic boom lift?
An articulated boom lift has jointed sections that can fold and angle around obstacles, making it suitable for navigating tight or congested job sites. A telescopic boom lift extends in a straight line from the base, offering greater horizontal reach and higher platform heights in open environments. If your work area has obstructions between the machine and the target location, an articulated model is usually the better choice. For maximum reach on open sites, telescopic is preferred.
What industries use boom lifts?
Boom lifts are used across construction, building maintenance, oil and gas, shipbuilding, infrastructure, telecommunications, events, and industrial facilities. Any application requiring safe elevated access to difficult-to-reach areas, from façade maintenance on high-rise buildings to equipment installation in industrial plants, can benefit from a boom lift.
Can boom lifts be used indoors?
Electric boom lifts can be used indoors as they produce zero direct emissions and operate quietly. However, boom lifts require sufficient ceiling height and floor space to manoeuvre safely. Floor load capacity must also be verified before deploying a boom lift on an upper floor or raised platform. For tight indoor environments with lower ceilings, a scissor lift or mobile scaffolding may be more practical.
Can boom lifts be used on uneven or rough terrain?
Yes. We offer rough terrain boom lift models specifically designed for outdoor, uneven, or unpaved surfaces such as construction sites, open land, and industrial yards. These units feature four-wheel drive, larger tyres, and enhanced ground clearance. Standard electric boom lifts are designed for smooth, firm surfaces only.
How many workers can operate from the platform at once?
Most boom lift platforms are rated for one to two workers plus their tools and materials, within the machine’s rated working load capacity. The exact figure varies by model. Always verify the rated platform capacity before use and never exceed it, as overloading a boom lift at height creates serious stability and safety risks.
Do I need a licence to operate a boom lift in Singapore?
Boom lifts are classified as Mobile Elevated Work Platforms (MEWPs) under Singapore’s Workplace Safety and Health (Work at Heights) Regulations. Operators must be trained and assessed as competent before use. Employers have a legal duty under the WSH Act to ensure all MEWP operators are adequately trained. While a specific boom lift licence is not always individually mandated, MOM-recognised MEWP operator training is strongly recommended and often required by main contractors on regulated worksites.
What is the safe working load of a boom lift platform?
Safe working load (SWL) varies by model and is clearly marked on the machine’s data plate. It accounts for the weight of workers, tools, and any materials on the platform. The SWL must never be exceeded, particularly at full extension, where the machine’s stability is most sensitive to overloading. If in doubt, our team can advise on the appropriate model for your load requirements.
Can I rent a boom lift instead of buying?
Yes. RR Machinery offers boom lift rental on daily, weekly, monthly, and long-term yearly terms. Rental is ideal for project-based work, one-off access requirements, or operations where the frequency of use does not justify the capital cost of ownership. All rental units are maintained to operational standard and delivered ready for use.
How does a boom lift compare to a scissor lift?
boom lift offers horizontal outreach and the ability to work around obstacles, a scissor lift moves only vertically and works best directly above its base position. If you need to reach over barriers, under structures, or into confined spaces at height, a boom lift is the right tool. If your work is directly overhead on a flat surface and cost efficiency is the priority, a scissor lift is typically more practical.
How do I get a quotation for sale or rental?
